Your wireless client should give the the mac of the AP its connected too! Unless the wireless device your talking to is actually your gateway - which is not what an accesspoint is. Or you have talked to the IP address of accesspoints interface. Which would not normally be the case - unless you have pinged it on purpose, etc.
