Autocad 2013 For Mac Why Can't I Bind A Reference
Our office is required to bind a set ouf our drawings for a contractor who is less than saavy at AutoCAD. He doesn't want to have to deal with re-pathing xrefs. SO, here I sit trying to bind these files and I have a problem. I open the External Reference dialog box. Click on the file I want to bind, select 'Bind.' Select 'Bind' from the pop-up dialog box CAD looks like it's working, and regenerates the drawing.

The drawing doesn't get bound. I've gone as far as cleaning up the title block drawing and the structural grid drawings (our 2 most very basic drawings that would be xref'd) I've even purged (including regapps) and audited. I've been doing this to every drawing with no success.
There are about 40 drawings that need to be done. Are there any settings that I am missing? It's not happening in every drawing, so I'm thinking that it can't be an ACAD setting.
May 21, 2017 - Right-click the selected DWG reference and select Bind from the shortcut menu. Named object definitions are added to the current drawing with a prefix of blockname $n$, where n is a number starting at 0. Insert also converts the objects in the xref into a block reference.
Trying to 'insert' instead of 'bind' does the same thing. Most of the xrefs are from another office with whom we are partnered with on this job and we have had alot of issues with their drawings. A RECOVER ALL sometimes helps in this situation but you and your contractor would be better of doing as others have suggested and use e transmit to a single folder and providing the contractor extracts all of the data to a single folder and your drawing files are clearly named and easy to distinguish from XREF files it should be simple for the contractor to open the drawing files and the XREF Files will automtically load.
This way the contractor will get the added coordination benefit that XREF Files give you. The bind tool is becoming obsolete as Autodesk enhance AutoCAD's reference facilities but don't enhace the bind tool. Don't know if it'll work for you or not, but something that usually works for us is to first just RELOAD the xref you want to bind, then BIND it. I have no idea why that is the case, but it's a fairly quick and painless workaround - when it works! I'm not entirely sure what causes issues like this, but I think it has something to do with an excess amount of unused blks that need to be purged out of the background itself.
Even if you purge the blks out of the Xref'd file, they are still technically loaded into the drawings that are Xrefing them in (kindof like layers). If you're trying Purge and that isn't working, look into a shareware program called SuperPurge.
It's basically the same thing as Purge, except far more thorough because it also purges out unused information from the Xref files at the same time. That's always seemed to help with issues like this.
